Real POM Belt Structure, Injection Capability, and Replacement Matching

For IQF replacement projects, buyers need more than a material name. YIYI checks the plastic module structure, stainless rod connection, edge parts, and existing drum compatibility before quoting.

Why POM

6 Advantages of POM Over Metal for IQF Applications

POM plastic belts are not a replacement for metal in all applications - but for specific IQF and gentle-handling requirements, the material advantages are significant.

Lower Drive Energy
POM belt systems weigh significantly less than equivalent metal spiral belts. Reduced belt weight means lower drive motor load - measurable energy savings on long-run 24-hour spiral systems.
Lighter than metal equivalent
📦
Gentle Product Contact
Smooth POM surface is less abrasive than stainless wire contact. Reduces skin breakage on delicate seafood, fruit damage from wire marking, and surface tearing on soft products at temperature.
Reduced product damage rate
🏭
Contamination Visibility
The blue colour of FG500P POM is specifically chosen for material review. A belt fragment in a light-coloured product - shrimp, white fish, pastry - is visible to automated optical inspection systems.
Blue = visible in product
🧲
Hygienic Open Structure
The open link structure provides no enclosed spaces for bacterial accumulation. POM does not absorb moisture or cleaning chemicals. Standard CIP procedures are fully effective - no belt removal required.
CIP-compatible design
🔁
Quieter Operation
POM-on-POM or POM-on-steel contact generates significantly less noise than metal-on-metal. Relevant for facilities operating near occupied areas or where noise standards apply during shift operations.
Lower operating noise
❄️
Cold Temperature Stability
FG500P grade POM maintains consistent mechanical properties down to -40°C - no embrittlement, no dimensional change from thermal cycling. Designed to perform across repeated freezer start-stop cycles.
Stable to -40°C
POM vs Metal

Choosing Between POM and Metal for Your System

Both belt types are used in IQF applications. The right choice depends on product type, system design, and operational priorities.

Metal Spiral Belt (SUS304)
Higher tensile strength - suited to heavier product loads
Longer documented service life in continuous high-load operation
Wider temperature range - suitable for high-temperature baking as well as freezing
Lower replacement cost per metre in standard configurations
Full traceability from YIYI Mesh Belt in-house wire drawing - exact material cert
Higher drive energy consumption - heavier belt weight
More aggressive surface contact on delicate products
Metal contamination harder to detect visually in some products
vs
POM Plastic Belt (FG500P Blue)
Lower weight - reduced drive energy on long spiral systems
Gentle product contact - less damage on delicate IQF products
Blue colour provides contamination visibility in food products
Quiet operation - lower noise profile than metal
Hygienic open structure - fully CIP compatible
Lower tensile strength - not suitable for very heavy load applications
Temperature range limited to -40°C minimum - not for high-heat baking
Generally higher unit cost per metre versus standard metal configurations

Need a Metal Spiral Belt Instead?

YIYI Mesh Belt's core product is the stainless steel metal spiral freezer belt for IQF systems. In-house wire drawing from 1.0mm to 12mm, documented production, final inspection, and fit verification can be prepared when the project requires drum or sprocket matching evidence.

FAQ

POM Plastic Belt - Common Questions

What does FG500P mean and why is the belt blue?+
FG500P is the material grade designation for the food-processing POM (polyoxymethylene / acetal resin) used in the belt mesh. The "FG" prefix indicates it is a food-processing formulation - compliant with applicable hygiene-sensitive material regulations. The blue colour is a deliberate material review measure. If a belt fragment breaks off and enters the product stream, the blue colour is visible to optical inspection systems and human line inspectors in light-coloured products such as white fish, shrimp, pastry, and produce. This makes contamination events detectable before product leaves the facility.
Can this belt be used as a direct replacement for a metal spiral belt on an existing system?+
In many cases, yes - but verification is required. The system geometry, rod pitch, and belt width must match your existing system. We will need your system geometry, the existing belt's rod pitch, and the belt width to confirm compatibility. Send us these parameters (or photos of the existing belt) and we will confirm whether the POM belt can run on your existing drums, or whether drum modifications would be needed. Sample test-fit can be arranged before committing to production when needed.
What is the operating temperature range?+
The FG500P POM belt is specified for -35°C to -40°C IQF spiral and tunnel freezer projects after confirming module structure, rod pitch, edge detail, and system geometry. POM maintains dimensional properties within its intended cold-chain range, but it is not suitable for high-temperature baking applications because it begins to soften above approximately 90°C. For baking or high-temperature pasteurising applications, the stainless metal belt is the correct choice.
How does the POM belt handle CIP cleaning?+
The POM plastic mesh and SUS304 stainless steel cross rods are both CIP-compatible - they withstand standard cleaning agents, caustic wash, and sanitiser concentrations used in food processing. POM does not absorb moisture or cleaning chemicals. The open mesh structure allows cleaning solution to reach all internal belt surfaces without belt removal. Belt-in-place CIP is standard operating procedure for most POM spiral freezer installations.
Can custom widths and pitches be produced?+
Yes. The standard rod pitches are 31.75mm and 34mm, covering the most common IQF drum configurations. Other rod pitches are available on request. Belt width is custom - we manufacture to your specified dimension. If you are replacing an existing belt, send us a photo or sample and we will match the full specification including width, rod pitch, and rod diameter. Sample review can be prepared before full production commitment when needed.
